What Alberta Health Covers for Eye Exams in 2026: The Complete, No-Confusion Guide

"Is my eye exam covered?" This is the question we answer many times a day at Charm Optical. The answer is different depending on your age, whether you have private insurance, and what type of exam or service you're having done.
Here's the complete breakdown with no vague answers.
Alberta Health Care (AHCIP) Coverage in 2026
Children and Teenagers Under 19
Alberta Health covers one comprehensive eye exam per year for all Albertans under the age of 19. No private insurance required. No out-of-pocket cost. Just bring your child's Alberta Health Care card. This applies from infancy through the end of the year they turn 18.
At Charm Optical, we direct-bill Alberta Health for all eligible exams. You don't need to pay and submit a claim. We handle that completely.
Adults 65 and Over
Seniors 65 and older receive one covered comprehensive eye exam per calendar year through AHCIP. Same process: bring your Alberta Health Care card, we direct-bill directly.
Adults With Certain Medical Conditions (Ages 19 to 64)
Working-age adults with specific medical conditions may have their exam partially or fully covered even without private insurance. The conditions that may qualify include diabetes, hypertension, thyroid conditions, certain neurological disorders, and others that can affect the eyes. This requires documentation and varies by case.
If you have a medical condition that affects your eyes or visual health, ask us when you call to book. We can tell you whether your situation may qualify for provincial coverage.
The Gap: Working-Age Adults Without Qualifying Conditions
Adults between 19 and 64 who don't have a qualifying medical condition are not covered for routine eye exams by Alberta Health. This is a significant gap in the provincial system that affects a large portion of the working population.
The out-of-pocket cost for a comprehensive eye exam in Edmonton in 2026 typically runs between $100 and $140, depending on the services included and the clinic. At Charm Optical, we're transparent about fees before your appointment.
Private Insurance: How It Works and What's Typical
Most employer group benefit plans include some vision care coverage. Here's what's typical, though the specifics of every plan are different:
- Eye exam: Most plans cover one exam every 12 to 24 months. Coverage typically ranges from $50 to the full cost, depending on the plan.
- Glasses/lenses: Most plans have an annual or biennial benefit for frames and lenses, typically between $150 and $400.
- Contact lenses: Usually covered under the same vision benefit as glasses, to the same dollar limit. Lens fitting fees may or may not be included depending on the plan.
The most important thing to know: we do direct billing to most major insurance providers at Charm Optical. This includes Sun Life, Manulife (where we are in-network), Great-West Life, Blue Cross Alberta, Green Shield Canada, Desjardins, Standard Life, Industrial Alliance, and many others. You don't need to submit a claim yourself.
What Alberta Health Does NOT Cover
Alberta Health does not cover the following for most patients:
- Glasses frames, lenses, or contact lenses at any age (separate from the exam)
- Routine eye exams for adults 19 to 64 without qualifying conditions
- Contact lens fittings
- Laser eye surgery consultations
- Repeat exams within the same year beyond the covered one
The Alberta Seniors Benefit Program
Low-income seniors may qualify for additional support through the Alberta Seniors Benefit program, which includes a supplementary health benefit that may cover some vision care costs beyond the AHCIP-covered exam. If you're supporting an elderly parent or navigating this yourself, it's worth looking into.
When Your Benefits Are About to Expire
A lot of people wait until the end of the year to use their optical benefits and then miss the window. If your benefit year runs January to December and it's November, this is your reminder: use it before you lose it.

Frequently Asked Questions
What if I'm between jobs and don't have private insurance right now?
If you're between 19 and 64 without qualifying medical conditions and without private insurance, you'd pay out of pocket for a routine eye exam. We're transparent about fees at Charm Optical and will tell you the cost before you book. If cost is a concern, let us know when you call.
Can both spouses use the same insurance plan for glasses in the same year?
Each person on a benefit plan typically has their own individual vision benefit. Both you and your spouse can each claim their own optical benefit in the same year, within each person's individual coverage limits.
Does Alberta Health cover eye surgery?
Medically necessary eye surgeries like cataract surgery are covered by Alberta Health when performed by an ophthalmologist in a hospital setting. Elective refractive surgeries like LASIK or PRK are not covered. If you're dealing with a condition that may require surgical treatment, a referral from your optometrist or family physician is how you access the public system.
I'm self-employed and don't have benefits. Are there any options?
A personal health spending account (HSA) or individual health insurance plan can provide coverage similar to employer plans. These are available through most major insurers and some credit unions. An HSA in particular is a straightforward way to cover eye exams and glasses with pre-tax dollars if you're incorporated.
