5 People Who Should Not Buy Meta Glasses (An Optician's List)
Skip Meta glasses if any one of five things is true: you want them as your only pair, you want an Oakley Meta Vanguard with a prescription (that does not exist), you need eyewear today, you will not charge them nightly, or your prescription is more than two years old. Any one is enough.
We fit all eight Meta models at our Edmonton store, so this is not a case of talking down a product we do not carry. It is the opposite. The people who come back unhappy are almost always people who tripped one of the five things below, and a two-minute conversation before the order would have caught it.
None of these is a fault in the glasses. Each one is a mismatch between the product and the person. Work down the list and find out which one is yours.

Five groups. The list is short because the failure modes are specific, and because four of the five are fixable — they are a matter of order, not of taste.

Gate 05 uses the Canadian Association of Optometrists position statement on eye exam frequency and its position statement on valid optical prescriptions. Every other gate is our own dispensing experience at 5035 Ellerslie Road SW.
1. Do you want them as your only pair?
This is the most common mistake, and the most expensive one. Someone falls for the idea of one clever pair that does everything, and cancels the plan to buy a second set.
Here is the honest version. When the battery dies, your vision is fine — the lenses are still lenses. What goes quiet is everything you paid the premium for. That part is not the problem.
The problem is what happens on the bad day. Meta publishes up to eight hours of typical use for a fully charged pair of Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 2), with a charging case that adds up to 48 hours and a fast charge to 50% in 20 minutes (Meta newsroom, September 2025). That is a real routine: dock them at night, carry the case, top up at lunch. Fine for a gadget. Less fine when that gadget is also the only thing letting you drive home.
And if the frame needs to go back for service, it goes back. We do not have sellable stock sitting on the shelf to hand you as a swap — the demo units in store are for sizing and fit, and your pair is ordered in. A week without your only glasses is a bad week.
Buy them as your second pair. Almost nobody regrets that order of operations. Plenty of people regret the other one.

2. Do you want an Oakley Meta Vanguard with your prescription?
You cannot have one. This is the single most common disappointment we deal with, and it is worth being blunt: the Oakley Meta Vanguard is sun-only. Four PRIZM lens variants, no prescription option. Meta's own launch announcement describes PRIZM lens technology "designed to block out sun, wind, and dust" in an IP67-rated sports frame (Meta newsroom, September 2025). It is a running-and-cycling shield, not an everyday spectacle.
Seven of the eight Meta models we fit take a prescription. The Vanguard is the one that does not.
If prescription is the point, Meta has two models built specifically for it. In March 2026 Meta announced the Ray-Ban Meta Blayzer Optics and Scriber Optics as its first AI glasses made for prescription wearers, with overextension hinges, interchangeable nose pads and optician-adjustable temple tips (Meta newsroom, March 2026). 3. Do you need eyewear this week?
Then this is not the week. We keep demo units only at the store — they are there so you can size the frame on your own face, check the bridge, and hear the audio. Your actual pair is ordered in afterwards.
That is the right way to buy a $469 to $639 frame. It is the wrong way to solve a crisis. If your only pair snapped this morning, or you left them in a hotel in Calgary, or you start a job on Monday and cannot see the screen, order the Meta later and fix today's problem today.
What "demo unit" means
A demo unit is a fitting sample. It never leaves the store, and it is not a pair you can take home. Anyone who tells you a Meta model is sitting on a shelf ready to go is describing a different shop than ours. Ours are ordered in for you, and a single-vision pair to bridge the gap starts at $99.
4. Will you actually keep them charged?
Be honest about this one. Look at your earbuds right now. If they are at 4% in a drawer, that is data.
Here is what Meta publishes for the three models where it gives a figure for that exact model. These are Meta's numbers, not ours, and real-world use will vary with how much you record and talk to the assistant.

None of those numbers is bad. They just describe a device you charge. A pair of glasses is a thing you put on your face without thinking; a device is a thing you plan around. If you will not do the planning, the camera, the speakers and the assistant are all switched off, and what you own is a $469 frame with a slightly heavy temple.
5. When was your prescription last checked?
If the answer is "a few years ago, I think", stop before you order. The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends a comprehensive eye exam every two years for adults aged 20 to 64, and annually from 65 — or as your own optometrist advises (CAO position statement, reviewed July 2024). Its separate position statement on optical prescriptions recommends that the expiry date should not be longer than two years (CAO, May 2016).
Putting a stale prescription into a $569 frame is how people pay for the same pair twice. Worse, a routine exam is not only about the numbers — it is when glaucoma, diabetic changes and cataracts get caught, none of which announce themselves.

- You already own a working everyday pair. The Meta becomes the fun pair, not the load-bearing one.
- You charge things without thinking. Phone on the nightstand, watch on the dock. Add one more.
- You have a specific job for them. Hands-free photos with a toddler on your hip, audio on a bike without plugging your ears, a call while your hands are in an engine bay.
- Your prescription is current and we have confirmed it can be made in the frame you picked.
